What insurance conditions must be respected?

The driver must comply with certain conditions for the rental to be insured. You are also responsible for ensuring that they are met. The conditions are the following:

  1. Respect the conditions of age and years of driving license applying for your car category (see conditions by category). To know the conditions applying to your car, go to Your Cars > Selected car > See the listing, then Conditions required by Getaround.

  2. Pay for the rental using a means of payment in the driver's own name.

  3. For paper contract rentals, the driver has to sign the rental agreement, and so do you. For other rentals, the driver must complete the check-in on their app.

For paper contract rentals, you are responsible to scrupulously perform the verifications detailed in the rental agreement, which ensures that conditions 1 and 3 are met. Not making those verifications will make you lose the benefit of Getaround’s insurance cover, as well as Getaround’s revenues guarantee in case of extra charges (recovery of deductible, traffic ticket management, etc.).

For other rentals, the driver must have their profile verified before the beginning of the rental but you must check their driver’s license before handing out your keys to make sure they are the person who made the rental.

The driver also has to :

  1. Remain within certain European countries (see full list)

  2. Not use the car either for commercial transportation of passengers (taxi, private hire, ride-hailing, ...) or of goods. Only ride-sharing with sharing of costs is allowed.

  3. Remain the main driver of the car during the rental, which means the driver cannot rent a car on behalf of someone else. However, as long as the driver is the main driver, you can accept secondary drivers for free, which you'll have to add to the rental agreement as long as they meet the rental conditions.

You must also cancel a rental if you are aware that any of these will be disrespected. However, if you are deceived by a driver who wasn't respecting all of those conditions, in case of damage, all expenses will be at their own expense.

What happens if the driver lies about satisfying the insurance conditions?

If the driver makes a false statement and you are unable to tell that it is untrue in spite of all the verifications you performed, Getaround will cover you comprehensively, but Allianz reserves the right to take legal action against the driver.

How could I be denied insurance coverage?

You may forfeit your car's insurance coverage if:

  • You handed the keys to a driver who wasn’t verified

  • You make a false insurance claim

  • You report an incident to Getaround more than 5 days after the end of the rental

  • You do not sign the rental contract with the driver (paper contract rentals)

  • You start or end the rental outside of the planned times without extending it (to start earlier or end later)

  • Your car is not insured, at least with a third party liability coverage

  • Your car does not fulfil the compulsory routine inspection requirements of its registration country

  • Your car is not maintained properly (certificates can be requested)

  • You accept a payment of all or part of the rental fee out of the Getaround website

  • You didn't take pictures at the beginning of the rental (doesn't apply to Getaround Connect not Key Exchange rentals where the pictures are taken by the driver)
